LEFKADA TAVERNS - TRADITIONAL LEFKAS ISLAND - OUR STORY

Litharia is a traditional restaurant taverna, located in the village of Nikoli, which is near the tourist resort of Vassiliki, on the south part of Lefkada in Greece. The building of the tavern was an old mill and its history starts from the early 30's. The crushing of the olives was done with the stones, hence the name of the tavern, which were moved cyclically with the help of animals. The method of crushing was used from antiquity to the previous two centuries, when they were slowly made their first appearance, the mechanized "crushers."
Large quantities of oil were transported to market by donkeys. Over the years and when they started the truck transport in Lefkada, due to the lack of streets to Nikoli young people didn't have the possibility to use a truck and unfortunately left the village in search of work elsewhere. In the 70's the mill closed.
THE MEETING About 3 years ago the owner of the tavern Stathis Voukelatos , organized a meeting of friends, both Greek and foreign, in the beautiful village's main square where his mother, prepared the traditional dishes of the island. The simple meeting turned into an unexpected incredible success. The homemade delicacies of "mom" surprised Greeks and foreigners.
THE IDEA Since then, an idea was born, to build a restaurant where not only serve the traditional dishes of the village and the island, but use materials, produced by the family such as tomatoes, cheese, bread and more. The idea turned into action, and today there is a successful family bussiness well known throughout Lefkada.
